The patch of land which runs from the front of the Anglican Cathedral down to Great George Street is now beautifully laid out with new-build houses sitting amongst well kept gardens. These 1984 images are an indication of what the landscape was like before the housing work began.
The first picture shows the view looking north across the city with St.Johns Beacon clearly visible. In front of it and to the right you can see the dome of The Blackie. This vista seems almost impossible to imagine now. The scene looks like something from a war zone. The grey sky and grainy resolution of the print add to the overall bleakness.The second picture shows a detail from a found piece of engraved tile which I now wish I’d kept.

I am hoping/assuming that you have seen ‘Of Time and the City’ a film so beautiful and personal it made me weep in the cinema – you have captured a little bit of that here.
